India to Australia Travel Demand Increases: Numbers Expected To Reach Pre-Covid Levels

The pandemic spared no one, forcing people to restrict their movements and remain at home. However, these restrictions have only increased people’s hunger for travel. Indians are keen to visit Australia and explore its beauties soon. 

Nishant Kashikar, the Country Manager for the India and Gulf arm of Tourism Australia says that around 400,000 Indians are likely to flock to Australia in 2022. The government agency responsible for promoting Australian tourism is optimistic that this will help rive the tourism industry in the country post-covid.

Pandemic Slump 

Australia is a beautiful country and draws travellers from all over the world, which means it earns substantial income from tourism. Unfortunately, efforts to curtail the spread of COVID-19 meant the country had to implement one of the strictest lockdowns and some harsh travel restrictions. 

The tourism industry took a big hit, bringing a complete halt to leisure trips, honeymoons, sports tourism, business travel, and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions.) 

The desire was there. Australia is one of the most popular destinations for Indian travellers. That demand has built up over the past few years and is exploding into enthusiasm and eagerness. 

India – The Fastest Growing Tourist Market for Australia

According to trends and travel patterns, India is clearly one of the fastest-growing tourist markets for Australia. The country has just opened its borders and the Australian Consulates in India are already receiving around 8,000 visa applications every week. 

Note: This upward trend indicates that travel between India and Australia will not just get to pre-Covid levels but may even surpass them. 

Over a decade ago, only around 100,000 Indians visited Australia every year. In 2019, just before the Pandemic brought the world to a standstill, Australia received around 400,000 Indian visitors. 

According to a study conducted by Tourism Australia, around 1.8 million high-value travellers from India are set to visit Australia within the next two years. This is approximately 82% of the total high-value travellers from South Asian country. 

Big Plans for Tourism Boost 

Australia plans to welcome over 1.2 million Indian tourists to its shores every year by 2032. That would bring around $7 billion in revenue into the country. The confidence shows in how much the country is investing in promoting Australian tourism in India. 

Mr. Kashikar notes that there has been a 137% growth in the aviation capacity between India and Australia. We recently reported that Qantas, Australia’s largest air carrier, plans to run four non-stop flights between Bangalore and Sydney from September. This is in addition to four more new flight routes. 

The Australian government has also made it easier for Indian travellers to get visas to travel between 20^th March 2020 and 30^th June 2022. You can reapply for a visa without paying any additional fees. This option will remain open until December 31^st 2022.
