India Reopens Northern Airports – Important Update for Travellers

Last updated on May 12th, 2025 by Chakshu Kaur

Good news for travellers! India has officially reopened all 32 airports that had been closed due to escalating tensions near the Pakistan border. This move follows the cancellation of the NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) that was earlier issued to suspend civilian flight operations in sensitive regions across North India.

These airports were initially closed as part of security measures under Operation Sindoor, which began on May 7, 2025. The shutdown had disrupted several domestic and international routes—especially those connecting cities like Srinagar, Amritsar, Leh, and Jammu. Flights from Australia to these regions were either suspended, delayed, or rerouted.

Now that tensions between India and Pakistan have eased, and the region witnessed its first night of calm since the beginning of the crisis, authorities have resumed full operations. Airports such as Srinagar, Amritsar, Chandigarh, and Jammu are now open, and flights have started operating again as of May 12, 2025, from 10:00 AM onwards.

If you had a flight booked to any of the previously affected cities, you should soon be able to travel as planned. Airlines, including Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet, are gradually reinstating their services to normal schedules. Travellers are still advised to double-check their flight status and stay in contact with airlines or trusted travel agents.
