Postponement Of Quad Leaders’ Meeting 2023

The Quad, comprising the United States, Japan, Australia, and India, had scheduled a Quad Leaders’ meeting on 24 May 2023 in Sydney, Australia to discuss various strategic issues. 

However, Anthony Albanese cancelled the meeting as US President Joe Biden postponed his visit to Australia to focus on crucial debt-ceiling talks to prevent a catastrophe. Despite this, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia continues, highlighting the commitment of both nations to continue their engagements, regardless of external factors.

Last week Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told – “Prime Minister Modi will be here next week for a bilateral meeting with myself.” He also mentioned that PM Modi will also have business meetings and will hold a public event at Homebush at the Olympic site in Sydney.

On 16 May 2023, Tuesday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) made an announcement regarding Prime Minister Modi’s three-nation tour, commencing on Friday (19 May 2023). 

  • The first leg of the trip took Modi to the Japanese city of Hiroshima from May 19 to 21, where he participated in the annual summit of the G7 advanced economies.
  • Following his time in Japan, Modi proceeded to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, where he co-hosted the third summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) on May 22 alongside Prime Minister James Marape.
  • In the third and final leg of his trip, Modi travelled to Sydney, Australia, from May 22 to 24.
