Both countries are serious about promoting tourism between the two regions but they’re also very serious about security. However, all of the information on visas is readily available and the governments have worked to streamline the application process to make things easier.

We have consolidated the information to help you understand the process clearly and submit an error-free application.

Australia Visa from India

Australia is a very popular destination for Indians. People wish to visit, explore, study, or even settle down in the country. The Australia visa application process can be somewhat confusing because they are so many options available. The process can be broken down into five steps and they are explained below:

1. Find The Visa Type

Australia issues different types of visas for different purposes. There are different categories and subcategories, which means there may be a very specific visa applicable to the nature of your visit.

  • Australia Tourist Visa from India/ Australia Visitor Visa from India. There are six subcategories under this category. This visa is for people who wish to visit Australia for a short stay, either to meet family/friends, explore the country, or visit some event.
  • Studying and Training Visas, which include Student Visa, Student Guardian Visa, and Training Visa. These visas are for people who are visiting Australia to study or train.
  • Family and Partner Visas, which includes everything from adoption visa to aged parent visa. There are 23 subcategories of visas here. If you wish to visit family for a long time or move in with your family based in Australia, family or partner visas.
  • Working and Skilled Visas, which can include Business Owner, Investor, Temporary Activity, Short Stay Specialist, and more. There are 24 subcategories of visas under this category. These are for people who wish to work in Australia on a temporary or permanent basis.
  • Refugee and Humanitarian Visas include five subcategories like Refugee Visa and Protection Visa. They are for people facing a crisis in their home country and seeking shelter somewhere else.

13 visas fall under the ‘Other’ category and they include Medical Treatment visa, Special Purpose visa, and more. It is important to find the right visa category before you apply. Your application may be denied if you don’t provide the most accurate information.

Don’t worry about the number of options mentioned. The Australian Department of Home Affairs has provided a handy Visa Finder tool that can help you find the best fit for your journey. All you need to do is select the options mentioned and the tool will provide visa recommendations.

These recommendations will also offer some brief insight into what you get from the visa, how much the application costs, how long the document is valid, and how long it will take to process.

2. How to Apply for an Australian Visa from India?

The application process is pretty straightforward. We recommend keeping all of the required documents ready when you fill out the application form. You will find the list of documents required under each visa category descriptions on the Department of Home Affairs website.

The Australia visa process from India can be carried out in person or online. As most processes are digitized these days, an online application is preferable. Here’s a look at what you need to do:

  • If you’re a citizen of India wishing to visit Australia, you can apply for a visa online.
  • You need to open an ImmiAccount with all of your details. If you’re an individual applying for a visa for yourself or on behalf of someone, you need to open an Individual ImmiAccount.
  • The ImmiAccount will help you start filling out a new form, continue filling a form, save your progress, import an application, share with another account, and more.
  • You should fill the form out carefully, verifying every detail to ensure there are no errors. Mistakes will delay your application process considerably.
  • You will see a list of documents required on the application form. You can take as long as you need to fill it out so there’s no need to rush the process. Just take your time to collect all of the documents mentioned on the form before continuing.
  • You need to specify what each document is and select the options from the drop-down lists on the submission form.
  • Applicants are allowed to attach up to 60 documents for visa or immigration applications. For partner applications, the limit is 100 documents for each applicant.
  • Look at the size and format of the document files you can attach. All identity documents can’t be more than 500kb each and other documents can’t exceed 5MB each.
  • Once you have uploaded all of the documents and the visa application for Australia from India, click on the submit button.
  • You will need to pay the visa application fee directly through the ImmiAccount. You can pay using a credit card, debit card, UnionPay, BPay, and PayPal. You may want to inform your bank before you make the transaction. All payments are in AUD or Australian Dollars. Additional charges for converting currency may apply.
  • After you have submitted the application, you can use your ImmiAccount to check for messages from the Department of Home Affairs. You can also let the department know if you have made a mistake and even withdraw the application if necessary.

The ImmiAccount is a very convenient way to manage your online visa application for Australia from India. You can have all of your applications and related material in one place and can check the status easily.

Do not email the documents to the Department. Everything must be submitted through the portal directly.
