How To Perform Karwa Chauth Pooja? | Step-by-Step Guide

Early Morning Karva Chauth Puja Vidhi

  • Rise two to three hours before dawn, around 4:00 to 4:30 in the morning.
  • Begin the day by consuming ‘Sargi’ before sunrise and make sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Dress in traditional attire and apply cosmetics such as Henna, Sindoor, and Bindi to signify your married status.

Afternoon Karva Chauth Puja Vidhi

  • In the afternoon, set up a designated area, either inside or outside your home, by marking a small square space adjacent to a vertical wall, around four o’clock.
  • In the centre of the marked space, create a Swastika shape using turmeric.
  • Place the Karva Chauth calendar against the vertical wall. This calendar depicts deities like Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Lord Kartik, and Lord Ganesha, who are venerated during the puja.
  • Gather all the Puja materials on a plate, including Roli (red chandan), Mouli (holy thread), Haldi powder (turmeric powder), a glass of clean water or a glass of milk, a well-cleaned betel leaf, and a betel nut.
  • Position the Karva in the middle of the Swastik mark and pour water or milk into it. You can also use the Karva to store coins corresponding to various currencies.
  • Cover the Karva and add grains of wheat and sugar or 14 Maal-Puas as an alternative to sugar.
  • After applying Roli to the Karva, wrap the Mouli around its neck and tie it.
  • If you are performing the Puja alone, place an additional Karva next to the picture of the Karva Chauth festival. This Karva symbolizes the one given to Goddess Parvati by Lord Shiva.
  • Sprinkle droplets over the picture of Karva Chauth by dipping mango leaves into a glass of water or milk and using them to sprinkle liquid onto the image.
  • Apply Roli (red chandan), Akshat, and Haldi to the figures of the gods on the Karva Chauth calendar.
  • Exchange your Karva with another lady sitting beside you, saying: “Karva le karva le sada suhaagan karva le. Karva le karva le saat bhai ki behen karva le. Karva le karva le saat putron ki maa karva le.
  • Recite the story of Karva Chauth, also known as “Karva Chauth Katha.” The eldest lady in the group should ideally narrate the story, keeping uncooked rice grains in your fists as you listen.
  • After the storytelling, set the Karvas aside to be given to a nearby temple.

Night Karva Chauth Puja Vidhi

  • In the evening, dress in attire resembling that of a bride-to-be.
  • Prepare the Pooja Samigri for moon worship, which includes a low-sided pot filled with water.
  • Set up a small dish with ‘Akshat’ (raw rice grains), Roli (red Chandan), Haldi (turmeric), and a small Diya.
  • As soon as the moon appears in the sky, light the diya on the plate.
  • If your spouse is not present, close your eyes, think of him with reverence, gaze at the moon, and take a sip of water.
  • Once the rituals are complete, you may break your fast and enjoy a meal.

Karwa Chauth: History & Significance

Karwa Chauth is steeped in history, with its roots tracing back over 4,000 years. The term “Karwa” denotes the earthen pot used for storing water, while “Chauth” signifies the fourth day of the lunar month. This age-old tradition is believed to have its origins dating back to the time of the Mahabharata.

Karwa Chauth Story | Karwa Chauth Katha

One of the most renowned legends associated with Karwa Chauth centres around Queen Veervati. According to this tale, she observed a rigorous fast on Karwa Chauth, but her strength waned, and she fainted. Witnessing her plight, her seven brothers, overwhelmed by her suffering, devised a clever solution. They created a mirror in a peepal tree to reflect the light of the setting sun, creating an illusion of the moonrise. This ingenious ruse convinced Queen Veervati that the moon had indeed risen, leading her to believe she had successfully completed her fast. However, as fate would have it, the moment she broke her fast, she received the heartbreaking news of her husband’s untimely demise.

Devastated and grief-stricken, she hastened to her husband’s kingdom, where she encountered the goddess Parvati. The divine goddess revealed that her sudden widowhood was the result of a minor error in observing the fast. Stories like these have been passed down through generations and have contributed to the rich tapestry of beliefs and traditions surrounding Karwa Chauth.
