Amritsar International Airport, Punjab’s Aviation Hub

About Amritsar Airport

Amritsar Airport (ATQ) is Punjab’s primary international gateway and the spiritual doorstep to the Golden Temple. Named after Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru and founder of Amritsar. The airport is located in Raja Sansi, approximately 11 kilometres north-west of the city centre. It is one of the closest major airports to its city in India.

Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport operates from a single integrated terminal building with both domestic and international operations under one roof. You won’t find separate terminals here. They are located several kilometres apart. The airport also has a CAT III-B instrument landing system.

Amritsar Airport Terminal

ATQ has one terminal building, but booking engines sometimes refer to it as “Terminal 1” and “Terminal 2.” Both refer to the same structure. They’re just domestic and international wings.

Terminal Layout

WingPurposeAccess
Domestic WingDomestic arrivals & departuresBoarding Gate 2 (ground and first floor)
International WingInternational arrivals & departuresBoarding Gate 1 (ground and first floor)

There’s no terminal transfer bus, no 10-minute drive between buildings. The domestic and international wings share a forecourt and a roof, but they have separate departure halls and separate lounges, with no airside connection between them.

The critical rule for connecting passengers: If you’re arriving internationally and connecting to a domestic flight, you must clear immigration and customs, exit to the public concourse, and re-enter through domestic security. Build that re-screening time into your connection.

Terminal overview:

  • 40,000 sq metres of floor space
  • 30 check-in counters
  • 26 immigration counters (all in a single hall, queues clear faster than at Delhi on difficult evenings)
  • 12 customs counters
  • Four jetbridges
  • Single runway at 3,657 metres

Amritsar Airport Arrivals & Departures

  • Landing in Amritsar: International passengers arrive at the International Wing. After disembarking, you’ll clear immigration (26 counters), collect your baggage, and pass through customs. Domestic arrivals use the Domestic Wing.
  • Leaving from Amritsar: International departures operate from the International Wing. Domestic departures are from the Domestic Wing. Both wings are accessible from the same forecourt.
